Pre-Visit Pharmaceuticals (PVP's)

What are PVP’s?

Pre-Visit Pharmaceuticals (PVP’s) is the term we use to describe medication that is given to your pet prior to their visit at the clinic. The goal of this medication is to help reduce fear, anxiety, and stress.

What patients may benefit from PVP’s:

If your pet checks any of the boxes below, they may benefit from some pre-visit calming medications:

  • Become nervous or fearful at the veterinary clinic
  • Dislike being handled or examined
  • Are difficult to safely restrain when stressed
  • Become anxious during blood draws, nail trims, injections, etc.
  • Have had a particularly stressful veterinary experience in the past
  • Get anxious in the car or during the trip to the clinic
  • Need extra help staying calm for their visit

PVP’s and surgery:

We dispense PVP’s for every anesthetic procedure at our clinic (unless otherwise indicated).

Pre-surgical PVP’s include a sedative, and pain medication w/ sedation effect, and an anti-vomit medication.

Administering these medications prior to your pet’s anesthesia helps to:

  • Reduce or prevent wind up anxiety (which can lead to a pet requiring higher dosing of stronger injectable sedation)
  • Use lower dosages of injectable sedation and inhalant anesthetic gas -> which in turn, should allow your pet’s vitals to remain more stable
  • Anti-vomit medication will prevent your pet from vomiting the day of surgery, and hopefully encourage them to start eating sooner, once recovered from anesthesia.

Ultimately, we don’t want to see your pet unnecessarily stressed during their appointment, and we know you, as owners, feel the same way!

We’re happy to chat about PVP’s and other methods to keep your pet as calm as possible during their visit - contact the clinic for more info!
